Middle School Science Team Wins Invitation To State Competition

Johnston County’s home school science team, Team JOCO, will be taking a new, younger group of students to state competition this year. Last year, the high schoolers saw huge success at Science Olympiad regionals and some even won medals at state competition. This year it’s the middle school team that will be representing JOCO at the North Carolina Science Olympiad in Raleigh. Placing sixth overall at the East Carolina University regional competition, the students earned the hard-won bid in one of the largest regional competitions in North Carolina.

Made up of 15 middle school students from our area, Team JOCO has one main goal when competing: To show others the light of Christ. While learning key science concepts, making friends, and even winning are crucial; the focus remains on what God can do in your life if you let Him. Veteran member Cody Walker wants people to know, “True first place is trusting the Lord.”

When asked about the strong bond between the members of this team, Jeffrey Schall pointed out that Proverbs 27:17 says, “As iron sharpens iron, one man sharpens another.” These students are great at lifting each other up during competition and preparation and can’t wait to try their hand at the next level.

North Carolina Science Olympiad state competition will be held April 26 th at NC State University. Team JOCO invites anyone interested in seeing what the hype is all about to join them that day and watch the open viewing events. Win or lose, they are excited to represent our county.
