SMITHFIELD – Multiple agencies responded to the Neuse River Bridge on S. Brightleaf Boulevard (US 301 South) Wednesday morning following a report someone had jumped off the bridge.
Law enforcement, fire, and EMS units responded after a citizen called police stating a person, who appeared to be in distress, was on the bridge and may have jumped.
While rescue boats were in the water looking for the individual, the person returned to the scene. The man did not jump into the water but had walked into the woods next to the bridge.
The individual was briefly questioned by police. Later, officials said it appeared to be a miscommunication.
Crews quickly cleared from the scene.
