Motorcyclist Dies After Crash In Johnston County

CLAYTON, N.C. – A 26-year-old Clayton man died Saturday after a motorcycle crash near the entrance to Clemmons Educational State Forest.

According to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol, the crash occurred at approximately 1:26 p.m. on Old U.S. 70 East near Smokey’s Way. Devin Kohr Bobbitt was operating a 2007 Suzuki GSX-1000R motorcycle traveling eastbound at the time.

A witness told troopers Bobbitt attempted to pass a slower-moving vehicle while navigating a curve in a no-passing zone marked by a double yellow line. At the same time, another vehicle was stopped in the westbound lane while turning into the state forest entrance.

Troopers said Bobbitt lost control of the motorcycle, which left the roadway and struck a ditch, ejecting him. The motorcycle continued on, damaging a fence and landscaping at the entrance to the state forest before coming to rest on Smokey’s Way.

Bobbitt was transported to WakeMed in Raleigh, where he later died from his injuries, according to First Sgt. Michael A. Goldsmith of the State Highway Patrol.

Authorities said Bobbitt was wearing a Department of Transportation-approved helmet at the time of the crash. Preliminary findings indicate an improper passing maneuver contributed to the collision.
