SMITHFIELD – A motorcyclist died in an early morning hit and run accident. The accident happened around 2:00am today (Monday) on US 70 Business West near the Amazon warehouse, not far from Barbour Road.
The motorcycle was headed westbound when it was involved in a collision with another unidentified vehicle. The other driver drove away from the scene.
The rider was ejected and was located about 75 feet away from the motorcycle. The victim died at the scene.
The roadway was closed nearly two hours while the accident was investigated.
The name of the motorcycle rider has not been released.
The State Highway Patrol is investigating the crash and searching for the hit and run vehicle.
