SMITHFIELD – A new independent living center has been given the green light. The Smithfield Town Council has approved plans for an 83 unit facility on Kellie Drive off M. Durwood Stephenson Parkway.
When Smithfield Assisted Living facility was constructed on Kellie Drive, Smithfield Planning Director Stephen Wensman said the developer had intentions to also construct an independent living facility nearby. The site plan for the independent living center includes 12 studio, 59 one-bedroom, and 12 two-bedroom units.
Plans include 93 parking spaces, including four handicap spaces, an average of just over one parking stall per unit. Developers believe many of the future residents will likely utilize Johnston County Area Transit System (JCATS) for transportation around town.
The council approved a request by Carolina Commercial Contractors, LLC to construct the new facility on two parcels totaling 15.3 acres. The property is owned by Wolfpack Investors, LLC of Smithfield. A construction date was not announced.
