Multiple people were injured in a collision involving multiple vehicles this afternoon (Monday) on Interstate 95 in Johnston County. The collision occurred around 4:00pm in the southbound lanes at the Neuse River Bridge between Smithfield and Four Oaks.
Minutes earlier a minor accident had occurred in the southbound lanes near the US701 Exit at the 90 mile marker. As traffic began to back up for the first collision, a chain reaction crash occurred at the 92 mile marker involving approximately 8 vehicles. Approximately nine people were injured. None of the injuries were considered life threatening.
Numerous emergency personnel responded to the crash scene including the State Highway Patrol, Johnston County Sheriff’s Office, Smithfield Police Department, Smithfield Fire Department, Blackman’s Crossroads Fire Department, Johnston County EMS and Johnston County Emergency Services.
Southbound lanes were temporarily closed backing up traffic for several miles. Law enforcement detoured traffic off I-95 onto Highway 301 South. Northbound lanes remained open.
