The NC Highway Patrol has filed second degree murder charges against a suspected drunk driver troopers said caused a fatal crash Tuesday afternoon in Johnston County.
The collision was reported at 2:24pm on Old Fairground Road near Stephenson Road in the West Johnston community.
Troopers said a Toyota Tacoma pickup truck was pulling a utility trailer loaded with limbs southbound on Old Fairground Road when the driver, Ronald Trevor Holland, 44, of Angier cross the centerline in a curve. A Ford Mustang traveling southbound and driven by Tiffany Burnette, 44, of Massengill Pond Road, Angier drove off the roadway onto the shoulder to avoid being hit but was still struck by the pickup.
As a result of the collision, Burnette died from her injuries.
Troopers said alcohol was a factor in the crash.
Holland was charged with second degree murder, driving while impaired, and driving left of center. Holland was taken to the hospital for treatment and a blood sample was taken from him at the hospital to determine his alleged impairment. He was then transported to the Johnston County Jail.
