NAACP Hosts MLK Jr. Parade Celebrating Service And Civic Engagement

SMITHFIELD — Despite the threat of a few raindrops, the NAACP-sponsored MLK Jr. Parade marched through downtown Smithfield on Saturday morning, bringing music, color and community spirit to Market Street.

The parade, hosted by the NAACP Johnston County Branch, traveled along Market Street from Sixth Street to Second Street.

This year’s theme, “Urgency Meet Legacy – Living the Dream Today,” honored the life and work of Martin Luther King Jr. while encouraging community members to continue his mission through service and civic engagement.

Organizers described the parade as both a celebration and a call to action.

“The theme ‘Urgency Meet Legacy’ reminds us that Dr. King’s message remains just as relevant today as it was during the Civil Rights Movement,” organizers said in a statement.

Spectators lined Market Street, smiling and waving as parade participants passed by. Music filled the air as local groups, leaders and community members joined in the annual tradition.

Doris Wallace served as grand marshal, and comedian Jay Derrell was named master of ceremonies.

The annual event offered both reflection and celebration, drawing residents together to honor Dr. King’s enduring impact while urging the community to carry his vision forward through continued service and civic involvement.
