Names Released Of Husband And Wife Shot To Death In Murder-Suicide

JOHNSTON COUNTY – A Johnston County couple was killed in an apparent murder-suicide. The incident was reported at 10 Chaney Drive, Garner, off Cornwallis Road in the Cleveland community.

The Johnston County 911 Center received a 911 call around 6:44pm Saturday, however the phone line was silent and no one spoke. A dispatcher dialed the number back and a male answered saying he did not call 911. The dispatcher stated that during the call back they heard a female in the background saying, “Why do you want to kill me? I need help!”

Johnston County sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to the home. The first officer to arrive at the scene stated he heard what appeared to be a gunshot inside the residence.

The 911 Center called the phone number again and the man who answered stated he would step outside and speak with law enforcement. He never did.

Multiple attempts were made to reestablish communication with the male inside the residence without success.

The Johnston County Sheriff’s Office tactical team and incident negotiators were deployed to the address for a possible hostage situation or barricaded person. Negotiators repeatedly attempted to establish communications with the individual inside the home without success.

Officers obtained a search warrant and made entry into the residence. Upon gaining entry, a male and female were found deceased from apparent gunshot wounds.

The desedents were identified as 53 year-old Christopher Pugh and 54 year-old Teresa Adams-Pugh. They were married and both lived at 10 Chaney Drive, authorities confirmed.

In a press release, Sheriff’s Major Jeff Caldwell said the incident is being investigated as a murder-suicide. No additional details were released.

The Raleigh Police Department provided assistance to the Johnston County Sheriff’s Office Tactical team during the incident.

  1. I don’t understand why the police had to get a search warrant before they could enter the property if 911 heard her call for help and police heard a gunshot when they got there. Why did they have to wait?
