Nathanael Shelton Hired As Public Information Officer For Town Of Clayton

The Town of Clayton has hired Nathanael Shelton as its new Public Information Officer. He will begin work on March 15th. Shelton replaces former Public Information Officer Stacy Beard who resigned last year to accept another job.

A former resident of Clayton, Shelton most recently served as Executive Director of Johnston County Public Schools. In his work with the school system, he managed the communication and marketing team, produced news and media packages highlighting JCPS, supervised the district’s website, social media and news content. Shelton received his bachelor’s degree in mass communications from Barton College in Wilson.

“I am honored to be joining the Town of Clayton as Public Information Officer,” Shelton said. “As a former Clayton resident, I know firsthand what an amazing place it is, and I am looking forward to this opportunity to tell the Town’s story.”

Shelton was selected from a pool of more than 40 candidates. Shelton’s digital content development skills, experience with working on the front lines with a large unit of local government, and knowledge of the local market were some of the key attributes that differentiated him from others.

Town Manager JD Solomon said, “Nathanael is certainly battle-tested from his previous experience. He will get the opportunity to see some different aspects of local government communications and we will get an experienced communications professional who knows our town, county, and media market. His work ethic and family focus also make him a good fit for our team.”

Shelton is married and has two children. He and his family recently moved from Clayton to Selma to be closer to his wife’s work.

Shelton had made $78,636 as Executive Director of JCPS. His starting salary with the Town of Clayton will be $80,000. Beard, who previously held the position, was paid $83,730.
