A new officer has joined the Smithfield Police Department.

Officer Miguel Renteria was sworn in on July 7th by Smithfield Mayor John Lampe.

Renteria, 25, was hired under a partial employment contract while completing Basic Law Enforcement Training (BLET) certification at Johnston Community College.

Born in Florida, Renteria grew up in North Carolina and graduated from West Johnston High School before obtaining his BLET certification.

He lives in the West Smithfield area. In his spare time he enjoys playing volleyball and other sports.

“I hope to stay with the Smithfield Police Department as long as I can,” Officer Renteria told WTSB News. “I really hope to make a difference here in town.”

Renteria has been assigned to the patrol division, filling an existing vacancy.
