New Retail Center Could Be Locating On Highway 42 West

In a unanimous vote, Johnston County Commissioners have rezoned a large tract of land on Cornwallis Road at Highway 42 West of Clayton.

An application was filed by the Brown Group, Inc. of Scottsdale, Arizona to rezone 13.91 acres out of a 20.81 acre tract of land at 5266 Cornwallis Road, Garner, on the southwest side of the intersection of Highway 42 West and Cornwallis Road. The property is owned by Glen Ford Sr. Living Trust.

On April 1st, commissioners voted 7-to-0 to rezone the parcel from Agricultural Residential (AR) to General Business (GB). No announcement was made at the meeting of the potential future use, but the General Business classification can include a shopping center with retail businesses, a supermarket, auto sales, gas or convenience stores.

Planning Director Braston Newton said the applicant only stated a ‘retail center’ was planned for the site.

JoCoReport reached out to Brown Group Inc. to try and learn more about what type of retail center is being planned.  We were unable to reach anyone before our news deadline, however their company website indicates Brown Group is a leader in the development of shopping centers, including 24 shopping centers with tenants that include Bed Bath & Beyond, Best Buy, Costco, Kroger, Lowe’s, Petco, PetSmart, Target, T.J. Maxx, and Walmart.  Stand along stores include Goodwill, Home Depot, Office Max and Sports Authority.

No one spoke before Commissioners in opposition of the request.  The impact on traffic was only briefly discussed.
