Selma Fire Chief Philip McDaniel introduced a newly hired firefighter to members of the Selma Town Council this week.

Ben Meyer was selected for the position among 18 applicants for the full-time position. Meyer, 26, had previously worked for the Wake Forest Fire Department.  He began work August 3rd.

“He brings a lot of experience to the table,” McDaniel told WTSB News. “He has shown a lot of love for the this community. He is very enthusiastic.”

With his hiring, Chief McDaniel says the department will now have three full-time firefighters on two shifts and two full-time firefighters on a third shift.  He is hopeful to receive funding next year to bring the staffing to 3 on the third shift.

The department has 27 volunteers who also respond to calls.
