DUPLIN COUNTY – A Newton Grove man is facing a murder charge for a deadly October 2024 shooting in Duplin County.
Tyrek Da’sha Melvin, 29, was arrested and charged with “an open count of murder and possession of a firearm by (a) felon” on Tuesday, according to a release from the Duplin County Sheriff’s Office. He was being held in the Duplin County Jail without bond on Thursday.

The arrest stems from a shooting on Shine Road, near Faison, on the night of Oct. 19. Duplin County dispatchers said they received “several calls” referencing the shooting at 8:41 p.m. The Duplin County Sheriff’s Office and Duplin County Emergency Medical Services were dispatched to the scene.
First responders discovered two people were shot, according to the Sheriff’s Office.
The two victims were identified as 65-year-old Russell Hines, who “received non-life threatening injuries,” and Latonya Tiska Corbett, who “succumbed to her injuries,” the release stated. Corbett was 42 years old.
“As a result of this investigation sufficient evidence was developed, which led to an arrest warrant being issued for Tyrek Dasha Melvin of Newton Grove,” the release continued.
Melvin was taken into custody without incident. He was prohibited from possessing a firearm after a 2017 conviction of felonious assault with a deadly weapon. He was convicted in another case of inflicting a serious injury with a deadly weapon assault and three counts of possessing a firearm as a felon in 2023. He was sentenced to serve at least two years in prison for that conviction but was out within a year on July 11, 2024.
Melvin was out on parole when the Shine Road shooting occurred.
