SMITHFIELD – A residential street used as a cut through for large trucks has gotten new street signs.

At the request of Police Chief Keith Powell, the Smithfield Town Council unanimously approved placing No Thru Truck signs on East Hancock Street east of 9th Street.

Chief Powell said the residential street has low hanging utility lines and was not constructed for truck traffic on a regular basis.

Powell said large trucks are utilizing East Hancock Street to get to North Brightleaf Boulevard.

Police said they are now enforcing the truck traffic restrictions.
