Barbara Jean Coats Kornegay Wallace, known by her extended family as “Bob”, age 84, of Smithfield and widow of Donald Edward Wallace of Smithfield, died on Tuesday, 3 Jan 2023, at Chapel Hill Medical Center in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.
She was born 3 Oct 1938 in Lillington, Harnett County, North Carolina, to the late Dewey Marshall Coats and Gladys Babb Coats of Harnett and Johnston County, North Carolina. Barbara was preceded in death by her first husband Lewis Gaston “LG” Kornegay of Garner; her siblings: Clara Gibbs of Benson, NC; Lewis “Bud” Coats of Angier, NC; Rev. Charles Coats of Rocky Mount, NC; Tommy Coats of Lillington, NC; Mary Dunn of Four Oaks, NC; and Martha Lane Coats of Angier, NC, and Dewey Marshall Coats Jr. of Averasboro, NC.
Barbara was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star Chapter 121 until she became incapacitated by Alzheimer’s Disease. Her greatest enjoyment in life was her family, especially her grandchildren. She was a loving mother, a light to those around her, beloved by her children and grandchildren, who will miss her terribly.
Funeral services will be conducted at 4:00 p.m. Monday, January 9, 2023 in the chapel of Parrish Funeral Home. The family will receive friends from 3:00 – 4:00 p.m. just prior to the service. There will be a private burial in the cemetery at Plainview Presbyterian Church in Angier on Tuesday, January 10, 2023.
Surviving are her daughters: Amelia Wallace Miller and husband Mark of Murfreesboro, TN, and Lori Wallace Johnson and husband Eddie of Pine Level, NC; granddaughters: Sarah Miller Medley and husband Andrew of Buffalo Valley, TN and Lauren Johnson Reitmann and husband Michael of Benson, NC; great granddaughter Amelia Grace Reitmann, and great grandson Raven Medley; sister Annie Lou Griffis of Angier, NC; sister-in-law June H Wallace of Smithfield, NC; niece Elaine D Lee and husband Earl of Four Oaks and grand-niece and nephews Candace, Daniel, and Eric; niece Lynn D Stephenson and grand-nephews Jeremy and Jayce Stephenson; as well as other cherished nieces and nephews.
Barbara’s family would like to extend their gratitude and appreciation to Clayton House Nursing Home in Clayton, NC, for their care of Barbara over the last nine years. They would also like to send their thanks to the nurses, doctors, and care givers in the ICU unit at UNC Medical Center in Chapel Hill, who lovingly made Barbara’s last days peaceful.
