Betty Jo Butts Adams

Betty Jo Butts Adams, born September 3, 1935, passed away peacefully on September 20, 2026, in LaGrange, GA. Betty was the only child of William Preston Butts and Esther Turlington Butts.

She graduated as salutatorian from Angier High School and went on to graduate from East Carolina University. Betty devoted her career to elementary education, where she found great joy in teaching. She especially treasured the memories of her students’ outstanding musical performances.

A naturally gifted pianist, she had the remarkable ability to play by ear without reading music. Over the years, she shared her talents by playing piano in churches and for countless occasions, bringing music and joy to those around her. Betty played the piano at her own 91st birthday celebration just two weeks ago.

Betty is survived by her son, Charles Reavis Adams, and his wife, Marjorie; her beloved granddaughters, Logan Adams Johnston and her husband, Chris, and Emery Adams Long and her husband, Justin; Logan and Emery’s mother, Kim Adams; and her great-grandchildren, Jack, Will, Knox, and Mary Grey, all of whom brought her great joy.

The family extends heartfelt gratitude to the staff, caregivers, and special friends at Poplar Creek for the kindness, compassion, and care they extended to Betty. Betty truly loved Poplar Creek and living near family during her final year. We are also deeply grateful for the friends and loving caregivers who surrounded her throughout her years in Smithfield, North Carolina, particularly Jackie and Cathy Scott, whom Betty considered extensions of her family.

Betty will be laid to rest next to her beloved parents in Harnett Memorial Park in Lillington, NC.

Arrangements are being handled by Higgins Funeral Home in LaGrange, GA.
