Betty Sue Baker Wooten

Betty Sue Baker Wooten, 85, was born on September 15, 1940, in Pitt County, North Carolina and entered the presence of her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on Saturday, June 27, 2026. She devoted more than three decades of her life to serving others as a registered nurse, beginning her career at Johnston Memorial Hospital in Smithfield and retiring from Pitt Medical Center, where she lovingly cared for patients recovering from open-heart surgery.

Betty was a woman whose life was defined by her unwavering faith in Jesus Christ. She faithfully read her Bible and daily devotionals, cherished her weekly ladies’ Bible studies, and was an active, devoted member of her church, Princeton Church of God, joyfully singing in the choir, serving wherever she was needed and eagerly participating in R3 Serve Days. Known as a true prayer warrior, she filled countless journals with prayers for family, friends, and others in need.

Her love for Christ also led her on two mission trips to Nicaragua, helping support one of those trips by crocheting towels and dishcloths to sell. Betty found joy in crocheting, but her greatest joy was loving God and loving people.

She was blessed with three children, nine grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren, all of who were recipients of her fierce love and constant prayers. Those who knew Betty will remember her gentle spirit, her extraordinary kindness, and a heart that welcomed everyone she met. Above all, her legacy is one of tremendous love for Jesus, her church, and her family – a legacy that will continue to inspire all who were privileged to know and love her.

Betty was the daughter of the late Vernon Elias Baker and Vernessa Bundy Baker. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her daughter, Sandra Sue Wooten and a sister, Sally Baker.

Betty is survived by sons, Mike Wooten (Paula) and Whit Wooten (Kristen); 8 grandchildren, Michael Wooten (Parker), Meredith Wooten (Cameron), Trent Wooten (Avery), Jessica Proctor (James), Joshua Wooten, Chris Pounds (Crystal), Brandy Holmes and Alex Wooten; and 10 great grandchildren, Reece Wooten, Mary Katherine Wooten, Makenna Wooten, John Wooten, Skylar Pounds, Alynn Garcia, Caylyn Christopher, Zoie Davis, Christopher (C.J.) Pounds, Jr. and Lana Sue Pounds, 2 great great grandchildren, Isla Rose Pounds, and Joseph Allas Garcia.

The family will receive friends from 4:00 pm until 6:00 pm on Tuesday, June 30, 3026 at Princeton Church, 6085 US Hwy 70 E., Princeton, NC 27569.

The funeral service will be held on Tuesday, June 30, 2026 at 6:00 pm in the chapel of Princeton Church with the Reverend Matthew Cornett, and Pastor Randall Woodard officiating. The committal service will be held on Wednesday, July 1, 2026 at 10:00 am in the Riverside Cemetery in Smithfield, NC 27577.

Although flowers are welcomed, the family suggest contributions be made to Princeton Church Make Room Campaign.
