Doris Mitchell Pope, 77, passed away at UNC Health Johnston in Smithfield on Wednesday, September 6, 2023 surrounded by her family. Born in Johnston County on November 29, 1945, she was the daughter of the late Robert Lee Mitchell and Florence Jones Mitchell.
Doris loved being outdoors in her early years. She could often be found by the water with a fishing pole in hand. She also had a love for gardening. With her green thumb, Doris was able to cultivate a beautiful garden full of gorgeous flowers. Doris loved to play Yahtzee with her family and friends.
For Doris, her love for family knew no bounds. Each moment spent with her children and grandchildren was a cherished memory that she held on to forever. Doris will be remembered as a loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother.
A graveside service to celebrate Doris’ life will be held on Friday, September 8, 2023 at 10 a.m. at the Isaac Stallings Cemetery with Pastor Andy Stovall presiding.
Doris is survived by her children, Terry Wiggins and husband, Robert, Glenda Bowman and husband, Bob, Libby Woodard and husband, Doug, Pam Wells and husband, Glenn, and Wesley Pope and significant other, Jennifer Reavis; grandchildren, Brandon Wiggins, Heather Wiggins, Kimberly Wise and husband, Matt, Miranda Pace and husband, Dillon, Tyler Pope and fiancée, Mary Johnson; great-grandchildren, Alexandra Wilkerson, Everett Wise, and Atlas Pace; siblings Carolyn Capps and Jimmy Mitchell. Doris is also survived by many nieces and nephews that she loved dearly.
In addition to her parents, Doris is preceded in death by her siblings, Cecil Mitchell, Dennis Mitchell, Sherwood Mitchell; and longtime companion, Bobby Jernigan.
