Edward Randall “Randy” Allen, B.S., Ph.D., age 77, died peacefully on Thursday, August 29, 2024 at Springbrook Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Clayton, NC.
Dr. Allen was born on December 24, 1946 in Center, Alabama to the late Roy Brown Allen, Sr. and Donnie Lou Humphries Allen. Randy was a devoted husband and friend, and spent his time in pursuing science to help others. He competed a B.S. in Chemistry, Physics, and Mathematics at The University of Alabama -Tuscaloosa (Roll Tide!). He taught high school science in Jacksonville FL for a few years. He then attended The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and earned a Ph.D. in Microbiology. As a graduate student in the Department of Microbiology and Immunology, he received a prestigious grant from the Department of Defense to utilize new technology equipment. The National Institutes of Health offered him a Research Chemist position to continue his investigation of microorganisms using molecular genetics. He presented his research at national conferences, and publications were submitted in scientific venues. Following his research, he became interested in sales. When his wife attended graduate school at NC State University, he accepted a sales position with Merck & Co Pharmaceuticals where he blended his science knowledge and sales experience. Because he excelled at explaining the pharmacology of medicinal agents to physicians and healthcare providers, he received several awards while at Merck. His next transition was managing projects with his Mother-in-law on her farms in Johnston County.
He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Janice Marie Benson Allen, B.S., Ph.D. and treasured nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents and his siblings: Roy Brown Allen, Jr., Sylvia Allen Moore, and Sarah Allen Tarvin. He loved his dog, Rusty, and other animals of the home.
Randy, like a true scientist, read voraciously, analyzed things, and instructed those around him how to complete projects. He liked fine dining experiences, watching TV and movies, and enjoying double-dipped chocolate-covered peanuts. He enjoyed travelling to Paris, Spain, the Caribbean, and cities in the US. While Randy was quiet and methodical, he listened and participated in scientific discussions as well as social events. He loved visiting his parents and family, as well as taking his father and parents in-law to military reunions and vacations.
Randy contributed to science, education, and family operations until his health declined.
Randy’s ashes will be interred at the family cemetery in Cedar Bluff, Alabama at a later date. In lieu of flowers, consider a donation to environmental (Sierra Club) and animal welfare (ASPCA).
