Mrs. Elgie Weaver Creech, age 87, of Kenly, passed away on Wednesday, July 3, 2024, in her residence. Born on September 25, 1936, she was the daughter of the late Raymond Howard Weaver and Alice Overman Weaver. She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Leonard “J.L” Creech, Jr.; sisters, Ruthalene Weaver Crocker, Joyce Weaver Creech, and Peggy Weaver Knox; and brother, Raymond Howard “R.H.” Weaver, Jr.
Mrs. Creech was raised on a farm in Kenly, NC, and worked tirelessly throughout the summer tending to the tobacco fields and dairy farm. In 1955 she graduated from Glendale High School and subsequently married J.L., her childhood best friend, on November 12, 1955, that lasted a memorable 50 years. For thirty-five years, Mrs. Creech worked alongside her husband at Corinth-Holders Elementary School and Smithfield Elementary School as the head secretary until her retirement in 1996. She took pride in the work she did and considered every staff member and student as a part of her family. In addition, Mrs. Creech was a long-time member of Holly Springs Original Free Will Baptist Church where she was active in Sunday School and many other ministries as well.
Mrs. Creech was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, aunt, sister, and loyal friend. She enjoyed cooking delicious meals, attending church and family events, and visiting the hair salon on a weekly basis. Her happiest and proudest moments included watching her grandchildren, Joey and Josh, grow into successful adults, in addition to raising her loving daughter, Tammy. Other special people in her life included Nan and Chris Coates, and Jason, Alice, Knox, and Anna Kate Gipe.
Mrs. Creech is survived by her daughter, Tammy Jo Creech Atkinson and husband Eric of Kenly, grandsons; Joseph Steven Atkinson and wife Maggie of Kenly and Joshua Ray Atkinson and wife Cheyenne of Micro, sisters; Frances Weaver Wortham and husband Bob of Fuquay-Varina and Violet Weaver Jenkins of Smithfield, brothers; Johnny Douglas Weaver of Kenly and William Ray Weaver and wife Becky of Kenly, Jerry Randall Weaver of Apex, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will held on Sunday, July 7, 2024, at 3:00 pm with burial to follow at Holly Springs Original Free Will Baptist Church located at 80 Beulahtown Road, Kenly, NC, 27542. The visitation will take place in the church’s fellowship hall beginning at 2:00 pm prior to the service.
