His dedication to his military duties earned him several prestigious awards and accolades, including the Meritorious Service Medal, Air Force Commendation Medal, and the Air Force Good Conduct Medal, among others. Fernie’s passion for excellence extended beyond the military, as he later retired from the NC Highway Patrol as an Electronics Communications Specialist after 19 years of honorable service.

Together they raised four children, Jason Lee Royal (April), Victor Ray Royal (Beth), Frederick Dale Royal, and Sharon Jean Royal Samia (Mark), instilling in them the same values of kindness, integrity, and perseverance that defined Fernie’s character.
One of the joys of Fernie’s life came from his role as a grandfather to Rachel, Rebecca, Arthur, Justin, Richard, Sarah, James, Samuel, Victoria, Hannah, and Victor, who brought immeasurable happiness to his heart. He was equally delighted to welcome eight great-grandchildren into the family, a testament to the lasting love he cultivated among generations.
