Fleta Mae Byrd

Fleta Austin Byrd, 77, of Clayton, passed away peacefully at home on Sunday, August 16, 2026, surrounded by her family. Born on June 21, 1949, she was the daughter of the late Thomas Benton Austin and Flora Mae Austin. In addition to her parents, Fleta was preceded in death by her sister, Melba Austin Powell.

Fleta was a devoted member of Wilson’s Mills Advent Christian Church for 60 years, serving as a Sunday school teacher, youth director, trustee, treasurer, and pastor. She was a true woman of faith and shared the plan of salvation with all whom she encountered.

Fleta was an integral part of the Town of Wilson’s Mills from its incorporation in 1996, volunteering with recreation, community programs, and town events. She served as the part-time planning director from 2006 to 2012 and as a member of the Wilson’s Mills Town Council from 2013 to 2017. Fleta became mayor of the Town of Wilson’s Mills in 2021 and served faithfully until her passing.

Fleta is survived by the love of her life, Donald Byrd, with whom she shared 60 happy years of marriage; two daughters, Donnita Jones (Gary) and Amanda Jones (Daryl); three wonderful grandchildren, Justin Bradley (Kandace), Chace Bradley (Sarah), and Kenneth Jones (Brittany); and a great-grandchild, Evelyn Jones, who was the light of her world. She is also survived by her brother, Larry Austin of Knightdale; her sister, Margaret Baker of Four Oaks; and several nieces and nephews. Fleta also leaves behind her faithful companion, her little dog, Tiger Byrd, who was always by her side in her chair.

Fleta will be greatly missed by her family, friends, and all whose lives she touched.
