Hubert Junior Futrell, 81, of Garner, passed away at the VA Hospital in Durham surrounded by his loving family.
Hubert was born on March 30, 1943 to the late Hubert Lawrence Futrell & Essie Jordan Futrell. He served in the Army for over 25 years. In the Army, he served as Crew Chief in Vietnam from December 1966 to January 1968, he was a crew chief/door gunner on a UH-1 Huey Helicopter. Hubert was the first certified Black Hawk Helicopter instructor. He was an Army Aircraft Mechanic for Chinook Helicopters in Germany and following his B.S. from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University he taught UH-60 Blackhawk aircraft mechanics at Ft. Eustis. He was also a realtor. He really enjoyed flying.
Hubert is preceeded in death by his parents, Hubert & Essie; siblings, Bobby Futrell, Tom Futrell, Charlie Futrell, Eva Ruth Futrell Capps, Harold Futrell and Perry Joe Futrell; son Gary Frank Futrell; and grandson, Brendan Futrell.
He was a people person, who loved talking to anyone he met. He always had a joke, and loved telling them to people. Hubert enjoyed fishing, watching birds, and walking around in nature. He had a natural talent of singing, and enjoying making up songs.
But most of all, he loved his family, especially his grandchildren.
Hubert is survived and loved by his wife of 59 years, Gerda Futrell; daughters, Gabrielle and Doris Futrell; son, James Futrell (Sabrina); granddaughters, Stephanie and Robyn; grandson Gary; sisters, Stella Christensen, Linda Faye Tart, Essie Marie Williams, Kathy Futrell, Mary Sue Tew; brothers, Glenn Futrell and Stanley Futrell and several nieces and nephews.
A Visitation will be held on Friday, January 17, 2025 at Dunn Funeral Home of Newton Grove from 6:00 PM – 8:00 PM.
A Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, January 18, 2025 at Dunn Funeral Home of Newton Grove at 2:00 PM with a Graveside service to follow at Hillcrest Cemetery.
