James Donald Hensley

ASHEVILLE, N.C. — James Donald Hensley, a lifelong resident of Asheville, passed away peacefully at Mission Hospital on August 20, 2026, following heart failure. He had celebrated his 73rd birthday that day.
James was born August 20, 1953, in Asheville to Ralph Jackson Hensley and Betty Payne Hensley, who preceded him in death.
He is survived by his brother, Gary Hensley and wife, Doris, of Marshall, N.C.; his sister, Anita Lamm and husband, Mickey, of Four Oaks, N.C.; nieces, Sarah Sands and husband, Phillip, of Scotland, and Rachel Yefko of Four Oaks; great-nephews, Blaine and Danny; great-nieces, Ava and Tilly; and many cousins who held a special place in his heart.
James worked as a sales associate at AutoZone in Asheville, where he became a familiar and valued presence among his coworkers and the customers he served. He will be deeply missed by those who knew and worked with him.
James found happiness in the simple comforts of life. He enjoyed going out to eat on Saturdays and especially enjoyed reading at home with his cats nearby. His favorite place was his recliner, often with his special cat, Tebo, curled up in his lap.
The family would like to express their appreciation to the staff at Mission Hospital for the care and compassion shown to James during his final days.
In keeping with James’ wishes, no formal memorial service will be held.
