Jesse Herman Phillips, age 95, died Monday morning December 12, 2022 at his home with his wife by his side. Born October 16, 1927 in Johnston County he was a son of the late James Raeford and Mary Alice Garner Phillips and was preceded in death by his son, Ray Phillips; daughter, Stephanie Perry and wives, Imogene Phillips and Zilphia “Sissy” Phillips. Mr. Phillips was a barber in Raleigh and later at his home for more than 40 years, working into his 80’s. He was also a US Army veteran. Mr. Phillips was a member of Branch Chapel Free Will Baptist for almost 75 years, where he served as chairman and member of the Deacon Board for many years and he also sang tenor in the church choir and he, along with some of the other choir members, would sing at local nursing homes.
Funeral services will be conducted at 3pm Wednesday at Branch Chapel Free Will Baptist Church. Burial, with military honors, will be in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 2:00 -3:00 pm just prior to the service.
Surviving are his wife, Mary Belle Phillips; daughter, Wanda Rust of Selma; brother, Carl Phillips (Mae) of Clayton; grandchildren, Maria Rust and Logan Rust (Lauren) both of Zebulon and three great-grandchildren, Daniel, Kyan and Alaina.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial contributions be made to Branch Chapel Free Will Baptist Church, PO Box 100, Selma, NC 27576.
