Johnny G. Hatch

Johnny Grattan Hatch, age 82 passed away peacefully on January 13, 2025, surrounded by his loving family. He was born July 10, 1942 in Sampson County to the late Ira Wyche Hatch and Leaster Jackson Hatch. Mr. Hatch’s maternal grandparents were the late Mr. and Mrs. John William Jackson and paternal grandparents were the late Mr. and Mrs. Edwy Grattan Hatch.

The visitation will be Wednesday, January 15, 2025 from 6pm to 8pm in the sanctuary of the First Baptist Church in Four Oaks. Funeral services will be Thursday, January 16, 2025 at 3:00pm in the First Baptist Church Four Oaks Sanctuary. The service will be officiated by Rev. John Norman and the burial will follow in the Four Oaks City Cemetery.

Johnny attended Piney Grove Elementary School and graduated in 1959 from Clinton High School. He then attended East Carolina University and received his bachelors degree in 1963 followed by his masters degree in 1972.

Mr. Hatch began his teaching career at Four Oaks High School as a mathematics teacher and a coach. He worked at Four Oaks High School for five years before leaving to teach at Fayetteville Technical Institute where he continued teaching mathematics and coaching. He taught there for three years until being employed by Johnston Community College where he worked until his retirement. While working at Johnston Community College, Johnny held several roles including Chairperson of the college transfer program, Mathematics Instructor, and Dean of the two-year program. He served on the JCC Board of Trustees from 2009 to 2017.

Mr. Hatch was active in his community, serving several terms on the Four Oaks Town Board of Commissioners. He served as a member of the South Johnston Advisory Board as well as PTA president for Four Oaks Elementary School and South Johnston High School. He also served as President of the South Johnston Boosters Club for two years. Johnny was a charter member of the Four Oaks Civitan Club and served one term as President. He also dedicated several years as a baseball coach for the Four Oaks Recreation Program.

Mr. Hatch was an active member of First Baptist Church of Four Oaks where he served as a Deacon and Chairman of the Board for several terms. He also served as Sunday School Director and Royal Ambassador leader. Johnny loved serving his church and church family.

Mr. Hatch leaves to cherish his memory, his loving wife of fifty-nine years, Kay Barbour Hatch of the home, a son, Jonathan Lee Hatch and wife Kelly of Four Oaks, a daughter, Tanya Hatch Carberry and husband Stephen of Four Oaks, four grandchildren, Gracie Hatch Eason (Lance), Charlie Peyton Hatch, Colin James Carberry, and Lydia Morgan Carberry. Johnny is also survived by a sister Sue Hatch Smith (Ronny) of Clinton, a brother James Greg Hatch (June) of Leland, Sister-in-laws Linda Hatch and Jean Hatch of Clinton, and Kathy Barbour of Benson, many nieces and nephews, and his special pup Holly.

He was preceded in death by grandson Luke Aaron Hatch, his brothers, Michael Kent Hatch and Jerry Wyche Hatch.
