Jon Johnson

Jon Kelly Johnson, 54, of Merritt, NC passed away Wednesday, March 20, 2024, at home.

Affectionally known as both Jon and Kelly, he attended West Carteret and graduated from Garner Senior High School. After graduating, he began his career in housing construction. A skillful craftsman with wood, there wasn’t anything he couldn’t build and was a perfectionist with his work. Prior to his illness, he was employed by Marlin Woodworks. After retiring from work, he and his wife moved to the Bay River area where they made a loving home and where they enjoyed the water, fishing, and boating. He worked on a respect basis where respect was earned, and the same level given in return. He was fair, kind-hearted, honest, understanding, with high integrity, and expected and deserved the same. He was known by many for his sense of humor and colorful vocabulary. He loved sunrises and sunsets and took many pictures every chance he got. He loved to grill, entertain friends, and enjoyed a cold Natural Light. He was loved immensely and will be remembered and missed by many.

He was preceded in death by father, Mac Johnson; mother, Teresa “Chi-Chi” Kinney Eilertson; grandparents, Jack Kinney, Louise Kinney, and Dot Rhodes; and uncle, John Kinney.

Those left to cherish his memory are his loving wife, Sandie Creech Johnson; son, Kellen Johnson (Keri) of Smithfield; grandson, Angus Johnson of Smithfield; brother, Galen Johnson (Katie) of Zebulon; step-sister, Jennifer Eilertson of Colorado; nieces, Caitlyn Johnson and Erin Johnson, both of Knightdale; nephew Keghan Johnson of Knightdale; aunts and uncles, Betty Kinney, Ann Kinney Joseph (Jim), Phillip Kinney (Melissa), Cassie Kinney Kilpatrick (Kenny), and Lisa Kinney Hoyt (Keais); and many cousins, friends that he considered family, and his best buddy and therapy dog, Ruger.

A Celebration of Life to honor his memory will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers the family suggested memorial contributions be made to Camp Happy Kids of Carteret County, PO Box 262, Morehead City, NC 28557 or a charity of your choice.
