Joey’s life was marked by serving others. The way in which he served took many turns throughout his life, but he was always looking out for other people. He enlisted in the Air Force to serve the country that he loved. As his career then turned to Waffle House management, his heart was still in serving his customers and making sure that they had everything that they needed. This would continue as he worked for Carlie C’s, establishing relationships with those that he worked with. With Joey’s profound love for the University of Georgia Bulldogs, he could have easily been an ambassador for the school should such a job exist. Still, when Joey began working for Edward Jones, he found an opportunity to not only serve his clients in the realm of their financial needs but also care for them as individuals. The heart that Joey had for serving came from His Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
Joey would share the love of Christ everywhere he went and with everyone he came into contact with. Joey’s heart was touched by the love of Jesus and as his relationship with the Lord grew, the overflow of that relationship touched others. He found multiple ways of sharing the love of Jesus with people in the church and the community. Joey loved to sing, teach, and preach the gospel. Joey loved to sing with the choir and enjoyed every opportunity he had to raise his voice and praise the Lord. Joey relished the opportunity to open his home and welcome others to read and study God’s word in a small group. He taught a Sunday School class and was always a welcoming person to share a smile, a laugh, or a hug when needed.
Through the Maples Ministries, Joey was able to serve the community and other churches by singing and preaching the gospel. This ministry not only touched the surrounding community but reached other states. Joey saw every opportunity that he was given as a way of showing the love of Christ to others in the community, including being the Chair of the Chamber of Commerce in Benson. Joey loved serving in his church and his community. Yet, the ministry that was closest to his heart was his family.
Joey loved his family, and he loved serving with his family. Whether it was cooking for them or singing the praises of the Lord together with them, joy would fill his heart. Having the support of his family while he preached the gospel meant the world to him. Seeing his wife and children serve the Lord was the desire of his heart. Joey loved to laugh and make memories with all of his family because he believed that joy should be included in every aspect of life, even when things were incredibly difficult. Joey learned to trust the Lord through it all, and that faith was made sight as he was welcomed to the glories of Heaven by his Savior.
