    Larry Kenneth Hutchins, a reverent pastor, beloved husband, father, grandfather and selfless giver, passed into the arms of his Savior on January 7, 2025 at the age of 75 surrounded by his loving family at his passing. Larry leaves behind a legacy of faith, hope, and love with the greatest of these is love. (I Cor 13:13). Larry’s dedication to this has touched lives in unique and in meaningful ways.

    Born September 17, 1949, to James and Frances Hutchins. Larry entered this world in Durham, North Carolina, where the values of family, hard work, and faith were instilled in him from a young age. He was a brother to Mark Hutchins (Twyla, Jordan, and Elizabeth), Rebecca Smith (Marty, Lindsay, and Aaron) whose bonds he cherished throughout his life. Larry’s early years were marked by a deep sense of purpose, a trait that he carried with him into every endeavor.

    Education and faith played critical roles in shaping Larry’s journey. He pursued higher education at Campbell University and Southeastern Theological Seminary. His academic pursuits were fueled by not just a thirst of knowledge, but a calling to serve others through ministry. Before and after completing his achievements, Larry continued to his father’s family business, Hutchins Auto Supply in Durham North Carolina, a business he had always known that embued him with a sense of community and diligence.

    Ultimately, it was the call to spread the teachings of Christ that defined his professional life. Larry served in various congregations in NC and SC spreading the message of hope and salvation to countless individuals. His dedication to evangelistic work was unwavering: he was known for his persistent outreach efforts even when faced with rejection. His life was a testament to John 5:24; “He who hears my Word and believes in Him Who sent me has passed from Death into Life”, a scripture that embodied his mission.

    Larry married the love of his life, Carol Hutchins, with home he shared decades of marriage filled with love, support, and dreams. Together they raised three children, Jason (Jennifer), Shana (Marc), Jonathan (Carmen). As a father to these, Larry exemplified the virtues of kindness, patience, generosity, always placing the needs of family before their own . He taught his children the importance of integrity and the value of a dollar, yet he was never hesitant to give sacrificially so that others could benefit God’s blessings.

    As a grandfather, Larry’s heart brimmed with pride and joy for his 6 grandchildren and their spouses, Justin (Sarah), Julieanna (Shane), Jared, Frankie, Baxter, and Richard. He found immense joy in their company and played an integral role in shaping their characters, bestowing upon them the wisdom he had accumulated over the years. He had the proud opportunity to lead and baptize them into their communities of faith.

    Outside of his religious duties, Larry found joy in solace and nature. Whether it was savoring the tranquility of the mountains or the beach, the natural world was his sanctuary. He shared this love with his dogs, Harley and Posey, who were his faithful companions on a many leisurely walks. He was an avid golfer. Larry cherished the challenge and companionship with his wife that the sport offered. His talents extended beyond the green into the artistic realm, where he created beautiful stained glass pieces, each one a reflection of his creativity and patience.

    In every facet of his life, Larry was driven by his dedication to service. This was most evident in his passion for ensuring that everyone he encountered had the opportunity to know about Jesus Christ. His message was one of love, acceptance, and eternal salvation-a message he shared tirelessly, confident that there was no greater gift than bringing someone to faith.

    Larry’s teachings went beyond the pulpit, he lived these beliefs daily, demonstrating through action the lessons he hoped to impart to others. His life was an open book filled with stories of compassion and understanding, leaving an edilible mark on those fortunate enough to know him.

    “Dedicated” stands out as the word that encapsulates his essence. His commitment to faith, his family, and his congregations was absolute earning him not only respect and admiration but in a place of the hearts of all who walked alongside him on his journey.

    A memorial service to honor Larry’s life will be held Sunday, January 19, 2025, at 3:00pm at Calvary Baptist Church in Durham.
