Luther H. Peacock, a dedicated master shipbuilder and family man, passed away on Wednesday, September 25th, 2024, at the age of 84, just two days shy of his 85th birthday. Born in Wilson County to Alvin and Lela Peacock, Luther grew up in Kenly, North Carolina, where he attended Buckhorn Elementary and Rock Ridge High School.
Career and Military Service
At 18, Luther moved to Newport News, Virginia, embarking on a remarkable 63-year career at the Newport News Shipyard and Dry Dock Company. He graduated from the prestigious Apprentice School before serving two years in the United States Army. Returning to the shipyard, Luther contributed significantly to the submarine and aircraft carrier programs. He was involved with the design of the Los Angeles-class attack submarines, which were a significant advancement in naval technology. He worked on the design and overhaul development of aircraft carriers. His knowledge showcased his versatility across different types of naval vessels, and his involvement in the construction and design of 53 naval vessels over his long career demonstrated his extensive experience and expertise. He reached the impressive milestone of 6 decades working in the submarine and shipbuilding industry, indicating his dedication and passion for his work. He was awarded Master Shipbuilder in recognition of his skill.
Family and Faith
Luther is survived by his loving wife of nearly 63 years, Marietha (Godwin), and his children, William Peacock of Newport News, VA, and Robert and wife Linda Peacock of Selma, NC. He also leaves behind one grandson, Luke Peacock, of Gloucester, Virginia. Luther was predeceased by his parents and siblings, Billy Ray Peacock and Janice Brown. At age 29, Luther became a Christian and was a second-generation member of the International Pentecostal Holiness Church, a denomination with roots in the Azusa Street Revival of 1906 (Los Angeles, California).
Passions and Legacy
An avid sports enthusiast, Luther played baseball and football for the Apprentice School and later participated in the Newport News Shipbuilding baseball and golf leagues. He was a devoted fan of the Boston Red Sox, Boston Celtics, Baltimore Colts, and the University of North Carolina. Golf remained a cherished pastime, especially when shared with family, friends, and the Apprentice School Alumni golf tournament. Luther will be remembered for his unwavering faith, strong work ethic, compassionate nature, fun-loving personality, quick wit, and steadfast support for his immediate and extended family.
Final Arrangements
A graveside service will be held on September 30th at 11:00 a.m. at the Godwin Family Cemetery, 537 Jerusalem Church Road, Kenly, North Carolina 27542.
