Mary Wood Britt

Mary Alice Wood Britt, 85, of Smithfield, North Carolina, was called home to be with her Lord on January 13, 2026. Born on February 10, 1940, in Washington, D.C., Mary was the daughter of the late Kathryn Strobel Wood and Gerry Elmon Wood. She lived a life grounded in faith, devotion to her family, and quiet strength.
Mary was a devoted follower of Christ, and her faith was the foundation of her life. She trusted deeply in God’s promises and found comfort in prayer and scripture. Family was the greatest joy of Mary’s life. She was a loving mother, grandmother and great grandmother whose heart was always centered on those she loved. Her gentle spirit, steady presence, and unconditional love created a foundation of strength and comfort for her family. She will be remembered for her kindness, humility, unwavering faith, and her servant’s heart as a community volunteer.
Mary valued learning and perseverance throughout her life. She earned her college degree from North Carolina Wesleyan College in 1996, an accomplishment that reflected her determination, discipline, and belief in continual growth at every stage of life. Mary took great pride in her career, which began as a teller and bookkeeper, followed by two decades in the pharmaceutical industry, including teaching in the BioWorks program at Johnston Community College.
Mary was preceded in death by her son-in-law, Tony Hamilton, and her sisters Doris Gomber, Lidah Johnson (Sissy), Lillian Lipphard, and Jean Dean.
She is survived by her brother, Fred Wood; and her children Linda Britt (David), Lee Anne Britt Nance (Jon), Kathy Britt Hamilton, and Jim Britt. She is also survived by her grandchildren Nicholas Hamilton (Samantha), Will Nance (Anna), Blake Nance (Taylor), Taylor Hamilton Mitchell (Blake), John Yates Hamilton (Emma), Jack Britt, Sam Britt, and Charlie Britt; and her great-grandchildren Brinkley Hamilton, Julia Kate Mitchell, and Tilley Jane Nance. Mary is further survived by her faithful canine companion, Max, along with extended family members and dear friends whose lives were blessed by knowing her.
A time of visitation will be held on Saturday, January 17, 2026, from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m., in the fellowship hall, followed by a Memorial Service at 11:00 a.m. The visitation and service will be held at First Baptist Church in Smithfield, North Carolina, with Reverend Kristen Tucker officiating. A private interment will be held at Riverside Cemetery at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Baptist Children’s Home of North Carolina, P.O. Box 338, Thomasville, NC 27361, or the U.S. Dog Coalition & Rescue, 6125 Spicewood Drive, Fuquay-Varina, NC 27526.
