Miriam Carol Strickland, 75, of Raleigh, NC was called home on Sunday, March 5th, 2023. She received her Bachelor of Science from Campbell College in 1971 and a Masters of Arts in Teaching from UNC Chapel Hill in 1979. Miriam taught health and physical education for 31 years in Wake County. Her passion was coaching students and helping them excel at a sport. She coached women’s basketball and softball but her favorite to coach was volleyball. She enjoyed her time with all her students and players at East Wake High School and spending time with East Wake and Wake County FFA students and advisors. Miriam enjoyed tagging along to FFA camps and National FFA Convention and helping at the Children’s Barnyard at the NC State Fair.
Miriam was a huge UNC fan and loved to discuss the football and basketball teams with anyone. She enjoyed traveling and visiting others with her mom any and everywhere. Her second home was on the golf course with friends. Miriam and her partner-in-crime, Maryanna, spent many days trying every restaurant they could find so that neither them nor Janet had to cook.
She cherished long phone calls and visits with her brother, Garrett, and talking with Grayson about “that guy.” She loved her family and learning about her family history. She was especially proud of all of her nephews and nieces. She loved being in God’s country, Dobbersville, and enjoyed her time with friends who became family in Raleigh.
She is cherished by her very best friend, Janet Harris of Raleigh; her brother, Garrett Strickland of Mount Olive; nephew Reggie (Laura) Strickland of Mount Olive; “Mimi” to her great nephews and nieces Lauren Strickland, Will (Helen) Strickland, Savannah Strickland, and Grayson Strickland; and a great-great niece, Georganna Strickland. She also leaves a beloved four-legged friend, Ripley.
She was preceded in death by her parents George Sheldon and Burinese Odom Strickland and nephew, George S. Strickland II.
The funeral will be held at Brownings Methodist Church on Saturday, March 11th at 1pm with visitation to follow. The family is receiving visitors at nephew Reggie Strickland’s home: 1642 Country Club Road, Mount Olive.
