Birth Date: 11/03/1939
Deceased Date: 07/28/2024
Robert Daniel “Dan” Martin was born November 3, 1939, in Johnston County, NC, where he lived a simple yet abundant life until his passing on July 28, 2024. He was preceded in death by his parents, Herman and Loumet Martin, wife Kaye Narron Martin, son Robbie Martin, brother Eddie Martin, and sister Carolyn Martin. Dan loved his family as well as his farm, and enjoyed a successful career in agriculture while raising feeder pigs and tobacco, as well as helping neighboring farmers tend their land as well.
He was forced to retire from farming full time in 1982 due to cardiac issues and later worked in security for several years at Micro-Measurements Group in Wendell. Prior to his passing, he was still farming as much as possible with Ryan and Carlton on the family farm. Dan loved to joke and tell stories, many of them true but most with embellishments added along the way. He was an avid fisherman and enjoyed spending as much time as possible at the coast, fishing on Hadnot Creek. He was a jack of all trades and a wealth of knowledge about all things farming and fishing, which he thoroughly enjoyed sharing with others.
After many years of dealing with chronic health issues, Dan was no longer able to enjoy life to its fullest and stayed close to home so family could help him as needed. Rebekah was his devoted caregiver for the last few years and never left his side, scheduling and attending all of his appointments and making sure he had anything and everything he needed each day. They became the best of friends, made many wonderful memories, and both cherished their time together. Dan will be remembered for his infectious laugh, quirky sayings, and perfectly styled hair, but most of all for his love and the legacy he worked so hard to build for his family.
A graveside service will be held on Friday, August 2, 2024, at 3:30 p.m. in the Corinth Holders Baptist Church Cemetery in Zebulon.
He is survived by his brother Carlton Martin, nephew Ryan Martin (Rebekah, great nephews Will and Caleb), granddaughter Mekenzie Martin, and nephew Bobby Scott (Kathy) as well as many other beloved nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends.
The Martin family would like to provide sincere thanks to the many wonderful healthcare providers that have provided Dan with excellent and compassionate care through the years, specifically Dr. Maria Fakadej, Dr. Benjamin Atkeson, and most recently all of the staff at Johnston Health Home Hospice Care and the SECU Hospice House.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the SECU Hospice House of Johnston Health at 426 Hospital Road, Smithfield, NC, 27577.
