Ruby Lee Porter, age 90, went home to be with her Heavenly Father on Tuesday, May 7, 2024 at Kitty Askins Hospice Center in Goldsboro.
Ruby was born on September 19, 1933, to the late Samuel and Sallie Edwards Porter. In addition to her husband, Carroll Westbrook Porter, she was preceded in death by her brother, Whitley Faison Porter and, sister, Dorothy Porter Flowers. She was a member of Jordans Chapel Baptist Church and served in various roles there over the years. After high school, Ruby graduated from Crumpler’s Secretarial School in Raleigh. Ruby worked for many years for the ASC Farm Office in Goldsboro in addition to briefly working at the Wayne County Public Schools’ Central Office for a time before managing the Glam-O-Rama dry cleaners in Mount Olive.
Ruby enjoyed her simple, country life. She found joy in feeding her family every Sunday after church, reading her Bible, and was a natural green thumb planting and watering flowers in the springtime and summer. She enjoyed her beautiful yard, especially when the azaleas and dogwoods were in full bloom.
Ruby is survived by her son, Samuel Carroll Porter of Four Oaks, a daughter, Gail Minchew and husband, Marshall of Four Oaks, grandson, Porter Allen Jones and wife Jenny of Four Oaks, grandson Marshall Neal Jones of Coats, and two great-grandsons, Waylon Porter Jones and Henry Carroll Jones of Four Oaks.
Funeral service will be held at 3:00 p.m. Friday, May 10, 2024 at Jordans Chapel Baptist Church. Rev. Ray Smeltzer will officiate. Interment will follow at Jordans Chapel Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive family and friends immediately after the interment at the graveside or in the fellowship hall depending on weather. The family will also gather at Ruby’s residence at other times.
