Born in Coats to the late Lonnie Graham Pollard and Lucy Frances West Pollard on July 22, 1929, Ruby was one of ten children. With four brothers and five sisters, she was brought up during the Great Depression and graduated from Coats High School.
Ruby was an avid birdwatcher and could identify any bird you asked her about, even by their call. She was a professional seamstress, working for 20 years at Block Industries, and loved hand embroidering. She created countless beautiful needlepoint pieces throughout her life. Ruby also worked for several years at Data General, where she learned how to assemble circuit boards, but her talent in the kitchen is what she was most famous for. She was an excellent home cook, mastering perfectly baked biscuits, chicken pastry, sweet potato pie, fried chicken, and any southern dish you could think of.
On April 1, 1945, Ruby married Melvin C. Langdon. She was a wonderful homemaker for many years for Melvin and their two sons. Ruby also spent much of her time as a devoted caretaker. First, for her mother Lucy, caring for her until her passing in 1974. She then dedicated her life to caring for her husband, Melvin, until he passed in 1977. In 1983, Ruby married Alfonzo Barbour and, for several years, cared for Fonzo until he passed away in 1995. It is difficult to articulate just how unwavering and steadfast Ruby was in her dedication to others, for her whole life.
Most importantly, Ruby was a lifelong faithful follower of the Primitive Baptist Church principles. Anyone who met her could tell that the joy of the Lord was within her. Our grief is profound, but we take comfort in knowing that she is with her Savior.
Ruby is survived by her sons Phillip Langdon and wife, Carolyn, and Melvin D. Langdon and wife, Mary; Three granddaughters Dr. Amy Lark and husband, Dr. Rob Lark; Emily Langdon and husband, Will Claybrook; and Lauren Langdon; and great-grandson, Luca William Lark.
The family appreciates your thoughts and prayers.
