Shirley Fann Hayes

    Clayton – Shirley Fann Baker Hayes, age 88, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Wednesday, August 14, 2024, in the SECU Hospice House of Smithfield. Born, October 12, 1935, in Johnston County, she was a daughter of the late Leon Brooks Baker and Lessie Barbour Baker. She is preceded in death by her brother, Bill Baker, sister, Faye Spicer, brother-in-law, Jerry Glenn Hayes and sister-in-law, Shirley Hayes Jones. Shirley graduated from Smithfield High School with the class of 1954. She then worked for many years as an associate at the Johnston County Register of Deeds Office. After retiring from her work, she turned her attention to being a full-time homemaker, wife and mother. Shirley enjoyed reading, shopping and baking, but most of all, she loved spending time with her family, especially her grandkids. She was a member of Live Oak Baptist Church for many years.

    A memorial service will be held on Saturday, August 24, 2024, at 2:00 p.m. at Live Oak Baptist Church in Selma with the burial to follow in Sunset Memorial Park. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service beginning at 1:00 p.m.

    She is survived by her loving husband, Paul Sherwood Hayes, son, J.P. Renfrow Jr. (Courtney) of Clayton, grandchildren; James Preston Renfrow, Emma Grace Renfrow as well as nieces & nephews; Carmen Spicer, William Spicer (Beverly), Gordon Spicer, Randy Baker and Tonya Zucker (David).

    The family would like to offer a special thanks to the wonderful staff at the SECU Hospice House of Smithfield for all their loving care during Shirley’s stay there.
