Clayton, NC: Ms. Tamara “Tammy” Abernethy, age 64, passed away on Friday, December 22, 2023 in Colorado. Funeral Services will be held 11:00AM-Saturday, January 6, 2024 at Hickory Grove Advent Christian Church, 1232 Hickory Grove Church Road, Four Oaks, NC 27524. Burial will follow in Sunset Memorial Park in Smithfield, NC.
Tammy was born on August 14, 1959 in Canton, Ohio, to the late Ira Augustus Abernethy, Jr., and Marjorie Kathryn Garner Abernethy. She was also preceded in death by her canine companions, River, Tater, Skye and Belle, and feline companions Bonnie Jean, Blaze, and Ashley.
Tammy was a part-time research specialist in the department of Plant Pathology following retirement in that role after 32 years at NC State University. She attended Hickory Grove Advent Christian Church in Four Oaks, NC. She was a graduate of the Ohio State University, where
she obtained her bachelor’s and master’s of science degrees in plant pathology and was an avid Buckeyes fan. She loved animals, and enjoyed training her Labrador retrievers to compete in numerous agility trials over the years. Tammy also loved the outdoors and planting flowers.
Survivors include her sister, Holly Abernethy Brewer, and husband, Albert “Al” Sidney Brewer, Jr., of Smithfield, NC; nephews, Albert Sidney Brewer, III “Trey” and Aaron Michael Brewer, and wife, Patience; special companions, Jin and Mr. Cooper.
The family will receive friends 7:00PM-9:00PM, on Friday, January 5, 2024 at Rose and Graham Funeral Home 5820 U.S. Hwy 301, Four Oaks, NC 27524.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to The Healing NET Foundation at www.thehealingnet.org whose mission is to optimize the care of those with neuroendocrine cancer through education and collaboration among physicians, health care providers, patients, and caregivers.
