Thomas “Tommy” Raymond Phipps, 77, of Selma, passed away on December 14, 2024, at the SECU Hospice House in Smithfield. Born February 5, 1947, he was the son of the late Raymond and Ruby Phipps. In addition to his parents, Tommy was preceded in death by his brothers, Billy Stilley, Paul Stilley, and Sidney Phipps; and sisters, Faye Phipps and Shirley Sellars.
Tommy was an avid fisherman. He found joy spending his days fishing on a boat or a pier, whether it was at the coast or on a lake. Tommy loved to fall asleep under a tin roof when it rained while listening to The Ventures music. He enjoyed the simple things in life. He enjoyed his garden in the spring, where he would grow tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, squash, and other vegetables.
Tommy loved his beautiful wife, Connie. He always put her first. He was known to be a romantic, often bringing Connie gifts like flowers and jewelry. Tommy loved his family and made many sacrifices, not only for his wife but also for his children and grandchildren. He once surprised Connie with a “real” wedding, something they had never been able to do in their youth. Tommy was a light-hearted man, making every situation light and easy with the jokes he loved to tell (while always being witty).
Tommy is survived by his wife of 55 years, Connie Phipps; son, Raymond Tommy Phipps (Buffy Tapp) of Smithfield; daughter, Tammy Phipps Teachey (Fred) of Rocky Point; grandchildren, Alexa Teachey, Justus Phipps, and Kale Phipps; and sister, Georgia Lassiter.
A memorial service will be held at Remnant Church, 2377 NC-96 Selma, on January 4, 2025, at 11:00am. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the SECU Hospice House at Johnston Health Foundation PO Box 1376 Smithfield, NC 27577 Attn: Hospice Fund.
