    Smithfield – Anne Lee Hines Lassiter, loving mother, grandmother great grandmother and friend, passed away peacefully on Thursday August 26, 2021 at UNC Johnston Health in Smithfield.

    Anne was the fourth of seven children. Anne was born on January 17, 1932 in Smithfield North Carolina, a daughter of the late Joseph Ira Lee., Sr. and Rosalie Rogers Lee. She married her High School sweet heart Ben Gerald Hines, Sr. on August 25, 1956, and they made their home on South Second street in Smithfield, NC where she lived until her death. Mr. Hines died October 29, 1969 and she later remarried Jasper Hugh Lassiter, who preceded her in death on January 16, 1992.

    Mrs. Lassiter graduated from Smithfield High School in May, 1950 as Valedictorian of her class. She graduated from the business class at Woman’s College of the University of N.C. in Greensboro. She worked many years as a legal secretary for the firm of Wellons, Martin, Wellons and the Spence and Mast law firms in Smithfield. At other times as a secretary to T. Ruffin Johnson Insurance, and as an accountant technician at Johnston Mental Health Center. She then went to work as a teacher assistant at South Smithfield Primary School, and retired from there in 1992, Mrs. Lassiter was so industrious, efficient and loyal she was in demand as a secretary in many offices in Smithfield. However, she took time off to bring up her two children that were fatherless at an early age.

    Mrs. Lassiter was an avid bridge player and enjoyed visiting shut ins with her church circle and on her own. She was a lifelong member of the First Baptist Church in Smithfield NC, having joined the church at a very young age. She had taught the Intermediate girls for thirteen years in Sunday School, a nursery worker and had been a choir member.

    Mrs. Lassiter had traveled to many states in the United States, twice to Europe, Hawaii, Canada and British Columbia. She had also been to the Bahamas several times. She enjoyed traveling until her health begin to fail.

    Having been predeceased by her parents, three sisters, Janice Lee Norris, Margaret Rose Lee, Mary Jean Lee Johnson, she is survived by her daughter, Bonnie Hines Wagstaff and husband Rusty of Wendell; son, Dr. Ben G. Hines, Jr. and wife Dale of Beaufort, NC; a step daughter, Betsy Lassiter Byrd and husband Linwood of Four Oaks; three stepsons, Danny Lassiter and wife Carole of Newport, NC, Ronald Lassiter and wife Donna of Clayton, Michael Lassiter and partner Jerry Bowen of Shelby; her beloved grandchildren, Meghan R. Wagstaff and husband Tom of Missouri, Mary Russell Wagstaff Laurent and husband David of Wendell, Elizabeth Ann Hines and Emily Campbell Hines of Austin Texas and Benjamin G Hines II of Raleigh; many step grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren; her sister, Barbara Lee Meyer of Leawood, KS; her brother, James Wesley Lee and wife Catherine of Raleigh; many nieces and nephews.

    A graveside service for Mrs. Lassiter will be conducted on Tuesday August 31, 2021 at 10 AM in Oakland Heights Cemetery in Smithfield, NC. Due to the heat, family request that you wear causal dress clothes with mask. Rev. Colbert will officiate. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First Baptist Church Building Fund, 202 South Fourth Street, Smithfield, NC 27577 or Covenant Presbyterian Church Heritage Fund, 125 South Selma Road, Wendell, NC 27591. A very special thank you to mom’s dear caretaker, Diane Keene, for loving mom and giving her the best care possible.

    The service will be live streamed on Parrish Funeral Homes Facebook page for those who are not able to attend in person.
