Our amazing sister, Bettie, is celebrating in Heaven with Jesus, family and friends. She left us a little before 2 AM on January 20, 2018 at the SECU Hospice House surrounded by her loving family.
Bettie was born in Wilson County on February 28, 1936 to the late Maynard Lee and Gladys Vivian Watson Smith. She attended schools in Wilson and Johnston counties and graduated from Micro High School in 1954. She enjoyed playing basketball in high school at Micro, was a competitive bowler in California and was a member of a line dancing group after returning to North Carolina. She began working for the NC Department of Revenue and later retired from the NC Department of Agriculture. She had many friends at work and in the community.
Bettie was a very active member of Micro United Methodist Church serving in numerous capacities over the years. She was a former member of the Micro Planning Board and the Micro Junior Woman’s Club. She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother Royce, her sister Faye Dazey and two brothers-in-law, Marvin Dazey and Jim Phillips.
The family will receive friends at Parrish Funeral Home on Tuesday, January 23, from 12:30 until 2 PM. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM on Tuesday followed by burial in Selma Memorial Gardens.
Surviving are her sisters, Vivian Caldwell and husband Bill of Banning, CA, Annell Beasley, Becky Phillips, Susan Godwin and husband Eric, and Teresa Foster, all of Selma; and numerous nieces and nephews.
