Smithfield—Charlie Atlas Johnson, age 93, passed peacefully on September 13, 2018. Born on September 3, 1925 in Johnston County, he was the son of the late Joseph N. and Ida Lee Johnson. Charlie was employed for several years at Cecil’s Service Center in downtown Smithfield. Later he and his son Alvin purchased Cecil’s from Cecil Whitehurst. After retiring from the station he worked for Johnston County Container Sites until fully retiring at age 85. At Christmas he loved displaying his manger scenes and all his other yard decorations because it brought smiles and joy to so many people. Charlie had to give this up at age 86 due to back problems.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 AM Thursday, September 20, 2018 at Johnston Union Free Will Baptist Church where he was a member. Burial will follow at Knollwood Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 10:00 AM until 11:00 AM at the church prior to the service.
Charlie was preceded in death by his wife Elva Lee Boykin Johnson; sons, Dennis and Alvin Johnson; great-granddaughter Finley Anderson; two brothers; two sisters; and a loving daughter-in-law Wanda Johnson.
Surviving are: son, Wayne Johnson and his wife Donna of Clayton, NC; daughter, Phyllis Barbour and her husband Jerry of Smithfield, NC; sisters, Elizabeth Newsome and Lillie Cooper; six grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren: daughter-in-law Helen Johnson; several nieces and nephews.
