Cindy Christine (Chris) Mitchell, 85, passed away on Wednesday morning at SECU Hospice House in Smithfield, NC. Family and friends are invited to pay their respects from noon to 5:00 pm on Friday, June 19, 2020, at Parrish Funeral Home in Selma. Due to COVID -19 restrictions, the family will not be present during this time. A public graveside service officiated by Reverend Frank Grubbs will be held at 2:00 pm on Saturday, June 20, 2020, at Selma Memorial Gardens.
Chris Mitchell was born on April 25, 1935 to Kizzie Viola Sasser Parrish and Robert Ennis Parrish of Kenly, NC, both deceased. Chris was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Sylvester Mitchell of 52 years in December, 2004. She is survived by her daughter Pamela Mitchell Withrow of Smithfield and her son Robert Steven Mitchell and his wife Gena of Clayton. Chris has four grandchildren, Keeley Bidwell and husband Ted, Karla Withrow and husband Joey Bodie, Justin Mitchell, Summer Mitchell, and four great grandchildren: Audrey Bidwell, Trey Bidwell, Nixon Bodie, and Siena Bodie. She is also survived by brother Elton Parrish of Selma and sister Velma P. McCaslin of Houston, TX and preceded in death by her brothers Aaron Parrish, Kenneth Parrish, Willard Parrish and sisters Verna Cuddington, Estelle P. Strickland, Vira P. Coley, and Thelma Parrish.
Chris graduated from Princeton High School in 1954. She accompanied Robert in his travels serving in the US Air Force until his retirement. Chris began her career with the Johnston County Sheriff’s Department in 1974 and became the first female deputy in Johnston County. She actively served until her retirement as Captain in 1999 and remained an Honorary Deputy Sheriff. Chris was the charter President of the Johnston County American Business Women’s Association and was a member of the Selma Original Free Will Baptist Church where she served as a former deacon and a member of the choir. She was lovingly referred to as “Aunt Crick” by her numerous nieces and nephews.
