Daniel Gray Matthews

    SMITHFIELD – Daniel Gray Matthews, age 90, retired CPA, died early Monday morning, July 10, 2017 in the SECU Hospice House in Smithfield. Born September 23, 1926 in Johnston County, he was a son of the late Joseph Franklin and Naomi Nordan Matthews and was the widower of Loleta Langdon Matthews. Dan was a CPA in Smithfield and Dunn for 56 years. He was a member of the Fellowship Masonic Lodge, the Eastern Star and the Kiwanis Club in Smithfield. A US Navy veteran of WWII, he served on the USS Sanctuary as a Pharmacist’s Mate 3rd Class and was a member of the Smithfield American Legion.
    Funeral services will be conducted Thursday at 3:00 p.m. in the St. Mary’s Grove Free Will Baptist Church, of which he was a longtime member, with the Rev. David Langley officiating. Burial will follow in Sunset Memorial Park.
    Surviving are his son, Frank Matthews and wife Mary of Sneads Ferry; sister-in-law, Nadine Matthews of Angier; grandsons, Daniel Matthews and wife Robyn of Sneads Ferry and Joshua Matthews and wife April of Four Oaks; great grandsons, Eric Matthews, Ethan Matthews, Parton Matthews and Case Matthews and 2 nieces, Dale Mangum and husband Keith and Veta Hamm and husband Otis all of Angier.
    In lieu of flowers the family asks that memorial contributions be made to the American Cancer Society, 8300 Health Park, Suite 10, Raleigh, NC 27615-4728.
    The family will receive friends from 2:00 – 3:00 p.m. just prior to the service.
