Doris Phillips Eudy passed away on Sunday, April 25, 2021 at Meadowview Assisted Living in Smithfield, where she had resided since 2012. Graveside Services will be 11:00AM-Wednesday, April 28, 2021 at Hills of the Neuse Memory Gardens in Smithfield, NC. The family will receive friends following the graveside service. Rev. Percy Hartley will officiate.
A Johnston County native, she previously lived in the Wilson’s Mills community and in Four Oaks. She was born September 7, 1933, the only daughter of Chester D. and Mattie Bryant Phillips. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her oldest daughter, Verna Prock, husband, Ed Eudy, grandson, Adam Woodard and her older brothers, Junius, and J.B.
She treasured her years at Wilson’s Mills School, but spent her senior year at Four Oaks, graduating with the Class of 1952. After many detours, she fulfilled her lifelong dream of becoming a nurse, graduating from Wayne Community College in 1971. She was Dr. Will Lassiter’s office nurse until he retired, then assisted Dr. Devendra Sharma. For years, prior to returning to school, she and her former husband, Odis Baker owned and operated Doris’s Day Care Center in West Smithfield.
Whether she was playing with preschoolers or tending patients, her foremost role in life was a caregiver. She cared for her parents through their declining years while raising four children, working and serving in her church. She was always busy with what others needed but throughout was consistently patient and kind. She was a good listener, counselor, and a good Southern cook. She enjoyed taking it easy at Surf City or White Lake, usually with Rex, a beloved dog who was a very good boy.
Her survivors include daughters, Linda Cornetti of Raleigh, Shiela Bell (Jay) of Princeton, son Hank Baker (Susan) of Raleigh, grandchildren, Isaac Cornetti (Erin), Brian Minchew (Karen), Ricky Baker, Melissa Cornetti, Heather Weeks (Brian), Mary Cornetti (Mitchell Maynard), Alison Shepherd (Silas), Megan Wright (Mike), and Joey Baker (Kate). Also surviving are two step daughters and their families, a number of great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews.
Mrs. Eudy’s family wants to acknowledge the staff of Meadowview, whose care and attention proved year after year to be a reflection of the exceptional women they are. Clearly motivated by compassion and kindness, they have gone above and beyond what their duties call for in providing tenderness that can only be from their hearts. We will treasure them always.
In accordance with NC-COVID-19 guidelines, the funeral home suggests practicing social distancing and the three W’s: wait, wash, and wear a face covering. Masks are required for all services.
