Clayton – Dorothy Marie Carroll Cockrell, age 78, passed away Friday November 5, 2021 at the SECU Hospice House in Smithfield. She was born in Johnston County on July 26, 1943 to the late Needham and Kathleen Eason. Dorothy was one of 10 children and is proceeded in death by all nine siblings; and her second husband, Winfred (Wink) Cockrell.
No funeral services will be conducted, but a private service with close family & friends will be held at a future date.
Mrs. Cockrell is survived by son Woody Carroll & Michael, of Clayton; daughter, Roseland Bice of Epsom; grandchildren, Gage, Makayla, Kasey, Troy, Joshua; great-grandchildren, Kaylee, Nic, Gunner, Braxton and Peyton; great-great-grandchild Liam; and many nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Cockrell was a homemaker and cook most of her life. She also worked with the Town of Smithfield until retiring. In her spare time, she enjoyed reading, doing word search puzzles, and reminiscing about growing up in Selma, all the miles she and her sisters walked, walking the railroad tracks, hanging out and fishing at Holt’s Lake and Brown’s pond. The thing she enjoyed most of all was loving and spending time with her grandchildren.
The family would like to thank the staff at the SECU Hospice House in Smithfield for their outstanding and compassionate care and attention to Mrs. Cockrell.
