Dorothy Johnson Hulett, 82, passed away early Tuesday morning, September 26, following a period of declining health. She was born in Smithfield, NC on August 20, 1935 to the late Ethel McDaniel Johnson and David Johnson. She was also preceded in death by her sister Anna Johnson Stanley of Atlanta.
After graduation from Smithfield High School, Dorothy graduated from Duke University. She taught school in the Virginia school system for 30 years. After retirement she returned to Smithfield where she has lived for the last 20 years.
Dorothy is survived by a sister Elizabeth Johnson Sawrey of Smithfield, nephews David Sawrey and wife Rodney of Smithfield, James Charles (Scooter) Sawrey and wife Kathy of Charlotte, Andy Stanley and wife Sandra of Atlanta and nieces Susan Sawrey McGee of Wilmington and Becky Stanley Broderson of Dallas, Texas. There are eight great nephews and five great nieces.
A graveside service will be held on Friday, September 29th, at 11:00 AM in Sunset Memorial Park in Smithfield with Rev. Beth Burton-Williams, minister of First Christian Church, officiating. The family will receive friends at the cemetery immediately following the service.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the First Christian Church, 1001 S. Crescent Drive, Smithfield, NC 27577.
