Smithfield – Duane Harold “Duke” Ware, age 81, died Friday evening, May 8, 2020 in Springbrook Nursing and Rehabilitation in Clayton. Born July 15, 1938 in Wayne County, MI to the late Harold and Lydia Horbert Ware, he was preceded in death by his wife of 44 years, Dixie Lee Norris Ware on April 23, 2016. He was also preceded in death by daughters, Teresa Marks and Bobbi Looper. Duke was a retired USMC Gunnery Sergeant with more than 22 years of service and two separate tours in Vietnam.
A service, with military honors, will be conducted at a later date in the Eastern North Carolina State Veterans Cemetery in Goldsboro.
Surviving are his son, Thom Homburg of Green Bay, Wisconsin; daughters, Dawn Ware of Fond du Lac, WI, Deborah Barbour of Smithfield, Rhonda Givens of Lake Butler, FL and Jane Turner of Smithfield, nine grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.
