Smithfield – Edward Melvin Garner, age 84, died Sunday, February 4, 2018 in Wake Medical Center in Raleigh. Born October 30, 1933 in Johnston County he was a son of the late Willie E. and Vara Beasley Garner. He was preceded in death by a sister, Blanche E. Garner. Melvin was long time member of Wilson’s Mills Baptist Church for over 68 years where he served as a deacon. He was a veteran of the United States Army. Melvin loved spending time with his family, friends, and watching his Tar Heels play ball.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, February 7, 2018 in the chapel of Parrish Funeral Home with Rev. Billie Lawson and Mr. Jackie Stephenson officiating. Burial will follow in Knollwood Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 7:00 – 9:00 p.m. Tuesday evening at the funeral home.
Surviving are his wife of 53 years, Sheila Pittman Garner; son, Edward Garner, Jr. and wife Susie; daughter, Tracey G. Brewer and husband Charles, all of Smithfield; brother, Elmon “Lee” Garner and wife Karen of Chattahoochee, FL: and grandchildren, Cameron C. Brewer and Caleigh E. Brewer.
