Mrs. Genevieve Thornton Sorrell, age 87, passed away Sunday January 31, 2021, at Wake Medical Center in Raleigh. A Private Funeral Service will be held at Benson Baptist Church in Benson, NC. Burial will follow in Roselawn Cemetery. Dr. Lawrence Powers will officiate.
Genevieve was born June 7, 1933 in Benson, daughter of the late James (Jim) and Wilhelmina Thornton. She was also preceded in death by her beloved husband of 67 years, Billy Howard Sorrell.
Genevieve and Billy raised their family in Garner where she made many lifelong friends with whom she stayed in contact. Upon her retirement from the North Carolina Aquariums, she and Billy returned to her home town of Benson. Through the years, she was a dedicated Sunday School Teacher, enjoyed gardening, writing poetry, and playing her piano.
She is survived by her daughters, Gennie Kirby and husband, Sam of High Point; Cathey Cottle and husband, Donald of Angier; Phyllis Mobley and husband, Ralph of Clayton; Cammie Emery and husband, Bruce of Clayton; Lisa Parker and husband, James of Raleigh; and the lights of her life, 9 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren; sister, Sandra Thompson of Fuquay and niece, Sonja Voyles of Raleigh, NC.
There will be an open door, closed casket visitation from 12:00PM-5:00PM on Friday, February 5, 2021 at Rose & Graham Funeral Home in Benson, NC. The family will not be present during this time.
In accordance with the current NC-COVID-19 guidelines, the funeral home suggests practicing social distancing guidelines and the three W’s: wait, wash and wear a face covering. A mask is required for the services.
